Flooding in the U.S.

Published:

Heavy rainfall and winter storms led to dangerous flooding, river overflows, and multiple hazards last week.

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

Kentucky suffered the harshest weather. From February 14 to 16, some areas received over 7 inches of rain. At least 11 deaths have been reported so far and the number is still expected to rise as search and rescue attempts are still ongoing.

North Fork Kentucky River in Hazard crested at 14 feet above flood stage, marking the worst flooding there since 1984.

Governor Andy Beshear reported that over 1,000 water rescues had been performed. At one point all 120 counties in Kentucky were under a flood or flash flood warning.

14 mudslides were reported, as well as 300 road closures.

Tennessee had up to 8 inches of rain which caused significant flooding and in turn a levee failed on the Obion River and prompted evacuations.

Flash flood emergencies were also declared in Tazewell County, Virginia causing evacuations.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey was forced to declare a state of emergency in 10 counties due to flooding that left roads impassable.

Not only did our nation experience heavy rains and flooding, but there were also four tornados reported on February 15, in northeastern Mississippi.

And although it’s unknown what the cause was, a 54-inch water main busted in Detroit causing major flooding as well, on February 17.

Several feet of water were unleashed, and the flooding reached a depth of five feet in some areas. The freezing temperatures are expected to worsen the problem and clean up. Over 200 homes were affected by the flooding.

In Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 and various other places in the Bible, we are told of increasing weather events. Matthew and Mark call them “the beginning of sorrows” in the KJV. The NIV calls them “the beginning of birth pains.”

We encourage you to look at these events and compare to them to what the Bible says. They are all increasing in strength, number and also in uniqueness, many times.

Grok says this: In the U.S., 2024 saw 28-billion-dollar weather disasters (hurricanes, floods, wildfires) by December—above the 1980-2023 average of 8 annually (adjusted for inflation, per NOAA).

The increase in these natural, Biblical disasters is one of the ways we are told we will know the season. (It doesn’t matter who might be causing them- in case you’re wondering about that.)

We are not to be afraid. We are to draw closer to Him and take hope in knowing that “our redemption draweth nigh.”

We encourage ourselves together with you, to let’s continually examine our hearts and live in state of repentance and to keep oil in our lamps.
