A public health crisis is unfolding in West Texas. It started with two cases of measles in late January but has now turned into the worst outbreak in over three decades. At least 58 infections have been confirmed. Thirteen people have been hospitalized as a result of the outbreak, as of this writing.

Measles is a viral infection. The virus causes high fever, rash, and cough. Complications can arise leading to possible pneumonia and even brain infections.

Health officials in Texas have started mobile testing sites and free vaccine clinics. The CDC has contributed 2,000 doses.

Measles was eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, reportedly due to immunizations.

In 2024, 285 cases were reported across 33 states. In 2023, only 59 cases were reported.

The Texas Tribune reports the following breakdown per county:

As of Feb. 18, the case counts are as follows, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS):

  • Gaines County: 45
  • Terry County: 9
  • Yoakum County: 2
  • Lubbock County: 1
  • Lynn County: 1

There is some controversy rising because it’s being said that all or nearly all reported cases involve unvaccinated individuals, often emphasizing children and a Mennonite community with low vaccination rates. And this of course is being circled back to the Trump administration. It will be interesting to see the results but as of now, I can’t find proof this has been confirmed.

If you’re looking for ways to boost your immune system, here are several things that Dr. Josh Axe lists:

  • Vitamin C (1,000 mg 3–4x daily)
  • Vitamin D3 (2,000 IU daily)
  • Echinacea (1,000 mg 2–3x daily)
  • Elderberry (10 mL daily)
  • Oregano oil (500 mg 2x daily)
  • Zinc (50–100 mg daily)
  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Essential oils: peppermint and frankincense essential oil into the neck and bottoms of the feet
  • Probiotics
  • Stay hydrated
  • get plenty of rest and fresh air
