Mark your calendar for February 28, 2025, to see the rare seven planet alignment in the night sky. God has created a universe full of wonderful things to witness.
February 28, 2025, a ‘great alignment’ of seven planets will be visible in the night sky: Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars.
Visibility
Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury will be visible to the naked eye, if weather permits. Uranus and Neptune will only be visible through high powered binoculars or telescopes.
Early evening, shortly after sunset, will be the best time to view the alignment.
Frequency
The last notable “great” alignment occurred in May 2000, when Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were visible, though Uranus and Neptune were not part of this visible alignment.
What makes this one a “great” alignment is the number of planets involved.
Alignments involving all seven planets, as expected in February 2025, are much rarer, with the last comparable event occurring in 1962, and the next one after 2025 is not expected until 2161.
So, as you can see, this is a pretty rare event!
Grok explains the Frequency of these events as follows:
- Small Alignments (3-4 Planets):
- These occur more frequently, roughly every few years. For example, alignments involving bright planets like Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn happen periodically due to their relatively short orbital periods and visibility from Earth.
- Larger Alignments (5-6 Planets):
- Alignments involving five or six planets are less common, occurring roughly every 10-20 years. These events are notable because they involve planets with longer orbital periods, like Uranus and Neptune, aligning with the brighter inner planets.
- “Great” Alignments (7 or More Planets):
- Alignments involving all seven visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) are extremely rare. These events happen on timescales of decades to centuries. The February 28, 2025, alignment is one such rare event, as it includes all seven planets visible in the night sky.
WTHR lists the best dates to view the alignment as follows:
- Feb. 23-29, 2025: All seven planets will be visible together for a short window.
- Feb. 24, 2025: Mercury and Saturn will be in conjunction — appearing very close together, possibly as a single bright star to the naked eye. If you look closely, you’ll be able to see two individual planets.
- March 1, 2025: Saturn will start slipping out of view, marking the end of the full alignment.
